CBI Leadership Research

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has published the results of their members’ survey on safety leadership measures.

The CBI asked its members to comment on the key leadership measures that they employ now, and those they employed three years previously, to address health and safety issues in the workplaces. The survey revealed the following:

  • An increase from 61.5% to 78.4% of members who have a nominated health and safety board champion.
  • An increase from 44% to 60.1% of those who now monitor sickness absence at board level.
  • The frequency of members benchmarking health and safety performance against other similar organisations had increased from 41.3% to 62.8%.

Also, 28% of members said that the main trigger for the improvement was the Corporate Manslaughter Act 2007. More widely, 50% cited as the reason for the improvement the review/audit of the safety management system and 51% the inclusion as part of a wider corporate responsibility programme.
