Implementation of the Artificial Optical Radiation Directive HSE is expected to begin consultation on the implementation of the Artificial Optical Radiation Directive imminently, with implementation due by 27th April 2010. The Directive will cover industries that use powerful lasers, including those used in printing and manufacturing operations. It is not expected that the everyday use of lasers, for example in connection with car headlights and projectors, will be affected by the legislation. Since 1991 there has only been one injury related to artificial optical radiation reported to HSE. While injuries of this kind are often serious, many have questioned the need for legislation due to their infrequency. HSE has indicated that it intends to take a minimal approach to implementation of the Directive, so as not to impose unnecessary burdens on business. It intends to produce a simplified guide to its implementation following publication of the European Commissions guide to implementation, which is expected by the end of this year. HSE pages on optical radiation are available at http://www.hse.gov.uk/radiation/nonionising/optical.htm
