Swine flu - Update

We reported in our August edition the precautions you should take to lower the risk of your employees contracting swine flu and what to do when an employee has suspected swine flu.

Current guidance is for those with suspected swine flu to stay at home and not visit their doctor. This is likely to have a knock on effect on employers sickness absence procedures with many employees who are absent for a prolonged period being unable to provide a doctors certificate.

In a recent development the Department of Health is considering increasing the amount of time staff can sign themselves off from work from 7 to 14 days so that employees do not need to visit their doctor to obtain a sick note. If the proposals are put in place they are likely to be in force for 6 months. We will keep you updated.

If you suspect you have swine flu please call the Swine Flu information line on 0800 1 513 513. For guidance on managing the risk of swine flu please see the Department of Health’s website.
