Email Update, July 2010
Summer is here and we love it! But we're certainly not dozing in our hammocks just yet, in fact the community food sector seems to be buzzing at the moment with lots of exciting new projects and organisations coming to our attention. Check out some of the things that are happening below, and we challenge you not to feel inspired.

And if you enjoy receiving these email updates, please take the time to complete our survey (see right). The Fresh Ideas Network has funding until December 2010, and we would like you know what our users and readers would find most useful in terms of our service beyond that point.

FoodCycle: youth led food charity looking to expand into South East

Photobucket

Are you interested in gaining management skills, co-ordinating with different share-holders AND creating a successful enterprise to generate better community cohesion and reduce food waste? Then you should join the FoodCycle movement!

FoodCycle is comprised of multiple youth-led projects located at universities and youth centres across the UK and one small central office. It uses the synergy of donated food, volunteer time and an idle kitchen space to create positive social change in the community.

Projects are run end-to-end by young volunteers. In return for their time and effort, volunteers develop an array of REAL skills in leadership, organisational development, financial management, and community networking.

If you would be interested in setting up a FoodCycle scheme in the South East, email tory@foodcycle.org.uk for more information or visit the FoodCycle website.

City Harvest: growing food in urban settings
Photobucket

City Harvest is an online resource which demonstrates the wide range of benefits associated with urban agriculture with the purpose of strengthening and developing the movement in the UK and across the globe.
On the site you will find a host of publications documenting the social, educational, environmental, economic and health-related impacts of urban agriculture as well as case studies which provide working examples of these benefits in action.
City Harvest is a resource for everyone interested in food growing and sustainability and aims to be particularly useful for anyone who is looking for “hard” evidence to support urban agriculture related projects.
You can also upload publications and projects to keep City Harvest fresh and up-to-date.

*Healthy School Meals beyond reach of poorest families
Photobucket

An Ofsted report shows that some families are struggling to pay for school meals for their children.

Campaigners such as the Child Poverty Action Group fear that the Government's plans to scrap an extension to free school meals could leave a healthy midday meal beyond the reach of an increasing number of low income familes.

Tudor Trust

Tudor is an independent grant-making trust which supports organisations working across the UK. They support work which addresses the social, emotional and financial needs of people at the margins of society, and are particularly interested in helping smaller, under-resourced organisations which offer direct services and which involve the people they work with in their planning.

Visit the website for more information

*Wakeham Trust

The Wakeham trust provides grants to help people rebuild their communities. They are particularly interested in neighbourhood projects, community arts projects, projects involving community service by young people, or projects set up by those who are socially excluded. It favours small projects which do not employ staff, are not yet well established and that are doing something new or groundbreaking.

Visit the website for more information.
